Arm Yourself with Information

As we all are thinking about prepping for when the poop hits the fan, consider information as a #1 priority. Now we can search the net for all the good stuff that we like to learn about and read to our hearts content, but what about when the grid is down. When TSHF big time like, the grid will most likely be down too, leaving us all of a sudden unarmed with that infomation that was so readily available before. I suggest doing what I have been doing for a while now, if you like it and learn from it, PRINT IT. That's right, just click print, then store your hard copy in your organized notebook that you have just for this information. Sort by subject matter and now you can arm yourself on or offgrid with survival information. I hate to think that I had forgoten a firestarting trick or a water purification step in all the maddness that is to come. Think of new topics that interest you that you want to learn about and click and print. Make this notebook as large or small as you wish, the information you may need will vary with individuals and with their situations I'm sure, but you get the picture.

Good advice, Chris, we still need a paper back up. Thanks for reminding us.

Good advice. I have a web address for a water purifier in my homemaking notebook. I'm going to print it out today! Thanks, Gen--IL Homesteader

MOH, sometimes the old way is the most reliable.

Gen, Glad you're getting something from this post. Get that info printed.

Thanks guys for the comments.

I like the notebook idea--I have printed some stuff off, but as for finding it again when I need it...that may be another story. I wouldn't want the additional stress of looking for something I needed and was pretty sure I had somewhere during an emergency situation. I have also planned to put emergency recipes, etc., up in my store room, but that hasn't happened yet--thanks for the reminder that it may not always be available to do later.

Anyone try making their own activated charcoal? You don't need high grade activated charcoal to make a good charcoal filter. You can use lower grade activated charcoal and simply use more of it and pass the water through it more slowly. The higher end stuff is only important if you are dealing with a need for low weight or where space is an issue. But if you are doing this yourself at-home, neither of these are concerns. You can make your own activated charcoal for water filtration for 1/1000th what it costs to buy.

I started doing this a while back as well. My biggest problem now is keeping it organized. I have notebooks that I have grouped by general subject matter...food, shelter, etc. We'll see how long I cna keep that going. Anyhow, I think you are right, it is critical to have it printed.

Marie, it's hard to imagine that it might not be available, but it's best ot be prepared.

Anonymous, I'm gonna do some research on the filter you mention. Sounds like that would be a good informative post for us all.

Warren, good for you. Sounds like you got a good thing goning there. Good work.

Thanks for all the comments, keep 'em coming.
